Gears tactics review3/17/2023 ![]() Each Gear has a limited number of action points used to move, shoot and set up ambushes with Overwatch. You control a team of up to 4 Gears, who take turns against an eternally superior force of Locust. ![]() Together, the aim to take down a Locust general named Ukkon, who’s been creating ever-more terrifying monsters for the COG to fight and has the slight advantage of being basically invincible.Īs you’ve probably already guessed, Gears Tactics switches out the familiar third-person gunplay for X-COM style mechanics. The story revolves around Gabe Diaz, a gearhead trying to weather the storm of war in a COG garage when he’s forced into the fight by one-eyed, moustachioed veteran Sam Redburn. Gears Tactics is a prequel to the original Gears of War, set in the early days of the conflict between the COG and the Locust. The result is the best tactics game I’ve played in ages, one that offers both the cerebral satisfaction of tactical puzzle-solving, and the more straightforward satisfaction of impaling a steroid-addled lizardman on a bayonet the size of a baguette. Maybe we should hide behind that wall?” Just because it has chainsaws on the guns and characters who look like they’ve climbed out of a vat of horse testosterone doesn’t mean it’s stupid.Īll Gears Tactics does is embrace Gears of War’s smart secret identity, digging beneath the performative jock-ness on the surface and revealing the shy tabletop nerd underneath. It was, after all, the first shooter series to realise “Hey, those guys are shooting bullets at us. While turning Gears of War into a Tactics game might sound like the worst idea since mayonnaise in a squeezy bottle, the truth is that Gears of War has always been a tactics game. I probably shouldn’t be as surprised as I am. Even if you aren't and just enjoyed the Gears games, go ahead and give it a try because this game does a fantastic job of continuing the story and implementing things that are core to the gears experience in every bit of the game.Well carve me up with a chainsaw and call me a grub, Gears Tactics is fluppin’ brilliant. I absolutely enjoyed this game and would 100 percent recommend it to anyone that is a fan of XCOM or turn based strategy games. The game looks awesome, plays better and has fantastic mechanics that definitely feel like they belong in a gears of war game. ![]() Usually with these spin off titles, you can expect a watered down, low effort experience but that is definitely not the case here. I can't say enough how impressed I am with this game. The missions get a bit repetitive towards the end game and I grew a bit tired of the mandatory side missions thrown at you between every story mission but all in all, it was a really, really fun experience. A small tweak to the experience would fix this issue but it does force you to change your team frequently which I suppose some people may like. It's a very small problem, but definitely noticeable. And in order to do that, I had to use that soldier in every single mission I could. I was legitimately only able to keep one character that wasn't a main character leveled up enough to use consistently. The problem is, you'll constantly get replacement soldiers that are very often far superior than the soldiers you already have. You'll get to choose your team for every mission and you get replacement units after after mission that you can choose for the following levels. My only gripes with this are the progression is just a tad slow. The cutscenes and story are on par with most of the gears series, maybe just a tad shallow but that's expected. The graphics are not incredible in general but for a tactics game they are very impressive. The quality here is far and above what most games of this genre tend to be. The quality here is far and above what most games of This is an unexpectedly fantastic tactics game. This is an unexpectedly fantastic tactics game.
